What Does Rim Tape Do?

The rim tape protects the tube from mechanical damage by spoke ends, metal burrs and holes in the rim.

Which Size Rim Tape is Right for You?

When choosing rim tape you must check your wheel size, not the tyre size.
It’s important that the rim tape is the right diameter for your wheel, and the right width for your rim. Tape that is too narrow can slide out of place, exposing the spoke holes. Rim tape is available to suit road rims (700c), MTB rims (26", 27.5" or 700c for a 29er). The width is also important - skinny road racing wheels will require a narrow width rim tape, wider MTB wheels will take a wider rim tape accordingly.
For example, a typical road bike might take 700c x 16mm (narrow). A 29er might take 700c/Wide and a 26” MTB would be 26”/Wide.

How to Use Rim Tape?

An appropriate rim tape must completely and securely cover all spoke holes. Hollow section rims require the use of special rim tapes such as 'high pressure' rim tape. Rubber rim tapes are not suitable for hollow section rims, because the inflated tube pushes them into the holes.
The rim tape must cover the entire rim base. If the rim tape is narrower than the rim base it can slide and expose the spoke holes.
Alternatively, an adhesive, fabric or tubeless rim tape can be used on all rims. Slipping cannot occur due to the heat resistant glue. The 18 mm wide tape should definitely be used for racing bicycle rims (13C, 14C). The 15 mm tape is recommended only for rims with a relatively wide drop-center which offers a contact area next to the spoke holes which is wide enough for the tape.
