Schwalbe Tubes for brompton folding bike DEVELOPMENT

Schwalbe Tubes for brompton folding bike. THE WONDER MATERIAL FROM THE SCHWALBE INNOVATION HUB.

A bicycle tube is predominantly made of Butyl rubber. Butyl is a very elastic and airtight synthetic rubber. But as with the tire, other fillers are necessary to make up the rubber compound. The quality of a tube can vary significantly depending on the rubber compound. For instance Schwalbe tubes have extremely high air retention and elasticity. This high elasticity allows a wide range of different tire sizes to be covered. There is a difference between heat molded and autoclave tubes. Vulcanizing in a mold improves the uniformity of wall thickness, thus reducing weight and improving air retention. For this reason the autoclave tubes which can be produced easier have become less common over the past years. Schwalbe tubes have always been made using the heat molding process.Every tube also needs a valve, which is bonded to the tube during the vulcanizing process.

“Great inner tubes. Quality valve with threaded stem and retaining nut, which fits my Brompton rims perfectly (many others are slightly too large). Best inner tube I have found. Will be buying more of these…”

– JB, Satisfied Customer since 2018 –

“Bought these for a Brompton, originally with standard Brompton tyres, but more recently switched to Schwalbe Marathons. I quite like like the smaller cross-section, as makes slightly easier to fit and means they take up very little space if you need to carry a couple. Quality seems good with the few I’ve bought so far. Possibly lose about 5-10psi a week in my experience, riding around 125km per week.

– Mitchenall, Satisfied Customer since 2017 –

“Perfect size for Brompton. This replaces the original Kenda tube which is prone to leak at the valve neck.“

FAQ

AV4 and SV4 are  predominantly made of Butyl rubber. Butyl is a very elastic and airtight synthetic rubber which fits all Brompton tyres. It serves as base material for high end bicycle tubes and made in Vietnam.

AV4 and SV4 are exactly the same tube as the Brompton XL tube with the addition of a rim nut and a box. It fits all Brompton tyres. This inner tubes weighs in at just 85g and comes with a Schrader or Presta valve – that is a whopping 20g (almost 25%) lighter than the Brompton standard inner tube.

Like all Schwalbe tubes, AV3 AND SV3 tubes are 100% recyclable. Just like all other Schwalbe tubes, these tubes may be returned to us via the tube recycling programme.

On occasion, it may be necessary to remove or replace the tyre or inner tube on your bike.

The level of difficulty will depend on the tyre fitted and your experience.  It is recommended that this task is performed in a bicycle workshop environment with eye protection.

This task can also be completed with the Brompton Toolkit in an emergency situation.

To Remove:

  • Follow the procedures for front-wheel removal or rear wheel removal.
  • Ensure the tyre is deflated fully. If necessary, remove the valve cap and press on the valve core pin.
  • Using a tyre lever, hook it under the bead of the tyre at the opposite side of the wheel from the valve. Ensure you do not trap the inner tube.
  • If possible, hook the lever onto the spokes.
  • Place a second lever under the bead approximately one hand width away from the first lever.
  • Use the second lever to lift the bead over the rim of the wheel.
  • Take care not to damage the inner tube.
  • Take care, as the tension of the bead, may be tight and the lever may fly off.
  • Depending on how tight the bead is, a third lever, repeating the process above may be needed.
  • Work the tyre lever around the tyre until the bead is fully loose.
  • Remove the inner tube and repair or replace.
  • Remove the tyre from the rim. Check for damage or for anything perforating the tyre. Remove the item or, if damage has been done, replace the tyre.
  • Ensure the rim tape securely covers all spoke holes in the rim.

To Refit:

  • Refit the tyre to the rim. Please note: that some tyres are directional and have a corresponding arrow or mark.
  • Partially inflate the inner tube. NB; it should barely be able to hold its shape.
  • Fit the tube into the tyres ensuring the valve is squarely fitted in the rim. You may need to deflate the tube.
  • Fit most of the bead onto the rim by hand starting with the part closest to the valve. Ensure the inner tube is not being pinched by the tyre.
  • Using the tyre levers hook the last part of the bead into position on the rim. Take extreme care not to damage the inner tube. You may need to deflate the tube.
  • Depending on how tight the bead is, you may need to use multiple tyre levers. Take extreme care not to damage the inner tube.
  • Take care that tyre levers under tension do not fly off.
  • Ensure the tyre bead is evenly installed on the rim before refitting the wheel or inflating the tyre.
  • Follow the procedure for refitting the wheel to the bike.
  • Follow the procedure for inflating the tyre to the correct pressure.

NB. A Brompton pump will not enable you to inflate the tyre to the correct pressure. This is an emergency pump only and will enable you to ride to the nearest track pump.

Yes, however, a CO2 cartridge should only be used once the tube has been fully installed. Outside the tire, AV3 and SV3 tubes may only be inflated carefully until they reach a round shape and are free of folds (equivalent to max. 0.3 bar); CO2 cartridges are not intended for this purpose.

Yes, however, the tubes may only be reinstalled into a tire of the same width.

As Gerorge Orwell didn’t say “All tubes are equal, but some are more equal than others”. Schwalbe perform a leak test on all of the tubes they make (twice), including inflation for 24 hours to ensure they maintain their air pressure. The valve has a replaceable core (not found on all inner tubes).

Bear in mind that unlike this tube some inner tubes don’t have a rum nut. The rim nut secures the valve into the rim. Your bike can be ridden perfectly safely without a rim nut. It comes in useful when installing a tyre or attaching a pump – as it helps stop the valve being pushed inside the rim With some rims there may be a rattle/noise if the valve is not fixed – that is why often valves without a rim nut are coated in rubber. The rim nut must only be tightened by hand. Never tighten the rim nut with pliers, as this can lead to inner tube damage.

The clear valve cap supplied with the Schwalbe inner tubes should be used, especially with Schrader and Presta valves. It prevents dirt / water and chemicals from getting inside the valve and causing corrosion and damage – meaning the valve / tube will last longer.

AV4 tubes comes with a Schrader valve of 40 mm length and SV4 comes with Presta Valve of 40mm length. Just like the tube, the valve is made of thermoplastic polyurethane and is also 100% recyclable.

The valve insert of AV4 and SV4 tubes are screwed in and may be replaced if necessary. Therefore, the valve stem is also suitable for extensions.
