16 Inch Bike Tyres

16 inch bike tyres are commonly found on kids’ bikes, folding bikes, e-bikes and some scooters. They’re usually the first size of pneumatic (air-filled) tyres a child will use, offering a smoother ride and better grip than solid rubber options. Whether you're replacing a worn-out tyre or looking to upgrade, getting the correct size is key.

Understanding 16 Inch Bike Tyre Sizing

In Australia, 16 inch bike tyres are typically labelled using inch-based sizing — for example, 16" or 16 x 1.75 — but these figures can be vague and inconsistent across brands. That’s because “16 inch” refers to the approximate outer diameter of the tyre once inflated, not the actual rim diameter.

To avoid confusion, tyre manufacturers also use the ETRTO system — a far more accurate method of bike tyre sizing that we at Mr Cycling World prefer. For 16" tyres, the most common ETRTO number is 305, which refers to the inner diameter in millimetres — the part that fits onto the rim. The number before that (e.g. 54) indicates the approximate width of the tyre once fitted and inflated.

So while “16 inch” might suggest it fits a 406mm rim (which it doesn’t), a tyre marked 54-305 will fit correctly on a 305mm rim. This is a common source of confusion — which is why we always recommend checking the ETRTO size printed on the sidewall of your current tyre before ordering.

Aim to match both the ETRTO diameter and width where possible for the best fit.

If you're replacing tyres, there's a good chance you’ll also need new inner tubes. We stock a reliable range of 16 inch bike tubes to suit all common tyre sizes — including Schrader and Presta valve types.
