WHAT IS SQUIRT CHAIN LUBE?
Squirt Chain Lube is a unique chain lubricant – it contains waxes and water in emulsion form that stays clean, lasts long and extends drive train life. Squirt – Chain wax dry lubricant perfect for mountain city road bicycle . This is the ideal chain lubricant. It has the right viscosity with a selection of waxes which gives long lasting lubrication while keeping the chain clean. It performs best in dry, dusty conditions and if applied correctly in wet conditions too. No degreasing required – if needed the chain can be cleaned with a dry brush.
WHAT IS SQUIRT E-BIKE CHAIN LUBE?
Squirt E-Bike Chain Wax uses the same proven and trusted, biodegradable wax/water emulsion technology as normal Squirt Chain Lube and is fortified with specialized high-pressure friction modifiers. The new Squirt e-Bike Chain Wax is slightly more slick than normal Squirt Chain Lube, which will stand up to higher torque pressure and will last longer in wet riding conditions. E-bikes place higher demands on their drivetrains than standard bicycles, due to higher torque loads and power outputs. This means that e-bike chains experience higher rates of wear. Squirt e-bike Chain Wax was specifically developed to meet these demands and negate the higher rates of wear.

Squirt is readily biodegradable. Consisting of mainly long-chain natural carbon waxes and water with no organic solvents, bio-degradation of 88% occurs in 28 days (ThOD calculated according to the manometric respirometry method – OECD 301F, 1992).
WHY SQUIRT CHAIN LUBE WORKS.
We all like a clean, smooth-running and quiet drive train – even in dust and mud where we sometimes prefer to ride. Squirt does just that.
✺ Squirt lube is a wax in water emulsion, the first of a new concept in chain lubrication. When applied to the chain, the water evaporates leaving behind a solid layer of lubricating wax. This dry layer does not attract dirt or dust and the chain stays clean.
✺ Squirt contains different waxes for optimum performance, including efficient lubrication and adherence to the chain. Because its dry, build-up doesn’t occur and no grinding paste forms, extending drive train life.
✺ As a drip lube, Squirt’s efficiency is almost unrivaled. THE STORY OF SQUIRT CHAIN LUBE.
A practicing advocate came up with the idea to manufacture (invent), a syringe-like lubrication system that attaches to the bicycle downtube attached to the bottle cage, aligned over the chain so that one could lube their chain on the move. The reason for this, was that the wax lubricants in those days didn’t last for a long ride. Oil was a “no no,” as it turned black, collected dirt and formed a grinding paste which wore the chain out quickly and was not environmentally friendly.
So, he got three friends together, an engineer, a pharmacist and a fellow advocate, all mountain bike enthusiasts, to form a company. The engineering partner did the technical drawings and then a mold was commissioned and during 2003 the first lubrication system for lubing on the move was produced. On an unsure date in 2003, one of the partners’ wives’, and also a lawyer who became a partner later on, came up with the name “Squirt” for the “lube on the move,” lubrication system referring to the squirting action of lube from the lubrication system onto the chain.
The next logical step was to manufacture our own lube to fill the lubrication system. The challenge was to make a biodegradable wax lube that wouldn’t turn black and leave sprocket marks on one’s calf. The pharmacist oversaw this process and after extensive testing in Southern African conditions, we realized that the wax lube was so effective and long lasting that it effectively killed the Squirt lubrication system. The lube was then named Squirt and made its way into the shops of South Africa.
Squirt was launched in the United states in 2004 and legends, Ned Overend, Mike Kloser and Travis Brown were amongst the first to endorse it and Giant was Squirt’s first major US distributor. Following onto the success of Squirt Chain Lube, we then developed and launched Squirt BioBike Wash, Squirt Sweatsucker, Squirt Slurp, Squirt SEAL and Squirt Barrier Balm.
What started as a hobby had now become a full-time occupation for the partners doing what they enjoy: working in the cycling environment whilst doing their bit to protect the environment.

How to save watts with Squirt Wax-based Lube
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
Squirt Chain Lube is a bio-degradable wax based lubricant designed for bicycle chain lubrication in all weather conditions. Preparation and application are crucial to achieving the maximum benefits out of Squirt Chain Lube’s unique wax formula. Please read and follow the instructions below to achieve the best results and efficiency.
Factory grease, old lube or oil are sticky and prevent Squirt Chain Lube from penetrating into the cavities between the chain pins, rollers and plates where it is needed to do its lubricating job. Other lubes and factory grease can also have a chemical reaction with the waxes in Squirt Chain Lube, limiting their efficiency and leaving a black residue.
PREPARING YOUR CHAIN FOR A FIRST TIME SQUIRT CHAIN LUBE APPLICATION
We advise degreasing a new, out of the box, chain completely. For cleaning gunked up chain from previous oil, other dry lubes or new chain grease, soak in undiluted Squirt Biodegradable Bike Cleaner Concentrate for 30 minutes and use firm brush to accelerate the dissolving action. After degreasing it is imperative to clean off all degreaser thoroughly, and rinse properly a few times.
Shake bottle and apply Squirt Chain Lube to the rollers on the inside of the DRY chain while turning the cranks. Allow a few minutes for the chain lube to penetrate into the gaps between the pins, plates and rollers and then apply another layer of Squirt Chain Lube after 5minutes. Allow the chain to dry completely before cycling – especially in wet conditions.
NOTES FOR MOUNTAIN BIKE
Apply Squirt Chain Lube liberally to the chain. Don’t wipe it off, and let it dry completely before your ride.
NOTES FOR ROAD BIKE
After applying Squirt Chain Lube wipe the outside of the chain with a rag, taking most of the remaining chain lube off. In the event of the chain on a road bike going a bit black (soft rubber residue on some tar roads), still don’t degrease.
IMPORTANT NOTES
Dirt will generally not stick to Squirt Chain Lube, and the little bit that may, will eventually flake off with the lube. There is no need to remove wax from your chain again after applying Squirt Chain Lube. Just brush off occasionally with a dry brush and use a toothpick to remove some residue from the cassette and chain rings if necessary. A well waxed chain repels dirt, mud and water, and reduces chances of friction and chain suck. Remember that when you take your bike in for a clean or service to ensure that you impress on the service manager NOT to apply any chain lube other than Squirt Chain Lube, otherwise you will then have to go through the tedious process of having to degrease your chain once again.
HOW OFTEN
How often Squirt Chain Lube should be applied depends on the riding conditions. After a short while you will learn how long an application will last in your conditions. Of course, when you hear a dry chain noise, you should have applied already – so for the first few rides, while you learn about your conditions, it may be a good idea to take a small sample bottle with you on your rides.
Dry Conditions
Generally, every 4 hours on the MTB, and 6 hours on the road bike.
Wet Conditions
We advise to apply after every ride since this will enhance the lifetime of your chain and cassette. Applying Squirt Chain Lube after a ride is a good idea as the lube will dry and be ready for the next ride. When anticipating a ride in wet conditions, application the night before will ensure that the chain lube is dry the next day.
Frequently Asked Questions About Squirt Lube
Yes. Squirt should be started on a clean, properly de-greased and dry chain. Factory grease on a new chain should be removed with organic solvent if needed. A second application ten minutes after the first is recommended when starting out with Squirt.
De-greasing is not necessary when using Squirt. It does not form a black build-up like oils that traps dirt to accelerate chain wear. It does not smudge and stays dry. Brush off with dry brush if needed and remove occasional build-up from rear derailleur wheels with a toothpick.
It depends on riding conditions. In general, when you start hearing a dry chain noise, re-application is already due. In wet, muddy conditions it will not last as long as in dry-dust free conditions. In general, from 30 to 300 miles on one application – the chain will stay clean. If you expect riding in wet conditions, lube your chain the day before if possible.
Squirt Chain Lube is the original, first to market wax/water emulsion chain lube for use above freezing in all conditions. Low-Temp: Solid wax hardens below freezing point (32℉, 0) impairing lubing function. Low-Temp contains wax modifier that keeps the wax consistency optimal at these temperatures (0℉ to 32℉, -18℃ to 0℃). E-Bike lube contains high-pressure additives to deal with generally higher rotational force on e-bike drive trains. These lubes are interchangeable but the full benefit of each negated without proper de-greasing when changing.
Squirt should be stored between 40℉ and 95℉ with the cap on. If it freezes (below 32℉, 0℃) or dries out, it becomes thick. It can be restored to a creamy liquid by adding a little water and shaking it up (normally about 10% of water).
The small black particles are normal on stationary trainers. This also happens when on the road or trails, one just does not see it. It is the hard-wax components of Squirt shedding from the chain. Excess wax and dirt trapped sheds via this method. You may find that more wax accumulates on the chain of your trainer – this is due the chain not vibrating/shaking enough to promote shedding. Our biodegradability rating is therefor important as it would end up in the natural environment.
If stored under recommended conditions, the lube will last for many years. Stability samples of older than 15 years still retain functionality.
