Friday the 13th has been considered as the bringer of bad luck since the late 18th century. It’s not really clear where it all began. Some people believe that it was inspired by the Last Supper. Others suggest that it is strongly associated with the long list of bad luck history of the number 13. Some cultures, on one hand, consider Friday as unlucky because it was the day of the crucifixion of Christ. It’s also believed to be the day Eve gave the forbidden apple and Cain murdered Abel his brother.
In pop culture, it is synonymous with Jason, the masked psycho-killer of the slasher movie bearing the name of the infamous unlucky day. Numerous movies, games, novels, and merchandise also took inspiration from Friday the 13th. And of course in cycling parlance, 13 is the unlucky race number whereby the rider turns their dossard upside down on the back of his or her jersey.
Is Friday the 13th really unlucky?
A small fraction thinks that it is indeed an unlucky day. In fact, statistics show that a lot of people aren’t too keen on making huge financial decisions on Friday 13th. It’s also interesting to note that there are fewer accidents recorded on Friday 13th because people are extra careful with whatever they do.
Honestly, we think it’s just like any other day of the week. Hence, it shouldn’t be a cause for concern. Like any ordinary day, you should be cautious whilst you go cycling. Be wary of tyre blowouts by checking your tyres and tubes before you head out for an event or your usual cycling routine. Check the chainlinks, drivetrain, wheels and other parts of your bike to ensure that your ride is road-worthy. It would be quite disappointing and frustrating to deal with a defective bike part most especially if you need to go somewhere.
